I believe(could be wrong)that Eskrima, Kali, and Arnis are all fairly similar, but they do have a few slight stylistic differences and were made popular by different people. I'm not sure of the exact origins of them all, but they all focus heavily on weapons.

I'm a Filipino and but my ancestors are Malay. The invaders use to call use "indio" which means little brown people. And in the Philippines(Southern Region) specifically they call us "moro" which means savages or barbarians.. Our first Philippine hero was said to have killed the famous Magellan using Kali/Arnis. Now the armed forces of other countries(and movie makers) come to our country to learn Kali/Arnis. Maraming salamat. Teri Makasi!

@kalikujanSomehow your statements seem contradictory...You did say, and I quote:"malay is RACE GROUP, there're many tribes in malay/nusantara archipelago like: javanes, madurese, batak, melayu, aceh, bugis, bali, sunda, mandar, dayak etc... THEY ALL MALAY RACE..." Ok, help me out here:Javanese = Orang (or suku) Jawa Sundanese = Orang SundaMadurese = Orang MaduraMalay 'tribe' = Orang MelayuMALAY RACE = Bangsa ______? (fill in the blank)

i'm no expert, but kali is from the Philippines. Yeah!!!
kalikujan (July 9, 2008 at 12:16 am)
indonesian ppl use the term 'malay' refer to melayu/malaysia.ethnic melayu in Indonesia concentrate in east sumatera, riau island (batam, riau, bengkalis, bangka, belitung), west and central borneo a.k.a kalimantan. but it's diffrent in java isle or bali or lombok or sulawesi moreover in papua. they've own language and culture. if u ask them 'are u malay ?' they'll answer 'no, i'm javanese or i'm sundanese'. some of them can't speak bahasa Indonesia ( similiar malay language).

From my point of view, they all came from a common start, and then took various influences over time... given different names to differenciate the more recent geographical references from which they hail from today. Silat and kali both are heavily influenced by weapons usage, but i dont know about eskrima... looked to me to be a simplified combat oriented, maybe military influenced system... i might be wrong here. Can anybody elaborate? |
