Punellino fantastic explanation.I lived in Japan for roughly 2 years (Near ikebukuro). The way how Japanese people train and think about jūdō is completely different from our (westerner)way of thinking and training.PS : You shouldn't care to much about Rocafella. It's keyboard warriors like him that give everyone else a bad name.

PunellinoRespect man, you have been doing Judo for more than 23 years.Gr8 explanations. I like the explanation about lever and equilibrium.

Last thing when you choose a gym, be sure you will spend the same amount of time doing throws and doing ne-waza. Good Luck Jordan

the judo kata, or more known as, the formal part of judo, is FOR the street situations. Also, id like to add that if you got into a fight on the street, im preety sure their not a judoka,so their not going to know all the high leval throws, or the intense techniques of a judoka. This is just a personal statement so dontget argumentative about it, for im not up for a debate on this subject. Thank you.

Throws is something that comes with practice. Also is not just the problem of trowing but is a problem of lever and equilibrium. So if you don't break your opponent equilibrium you will never throw him.

jūdō is also completely different from Karate, because in jūdō you actually have a physical contact with your opponent while when training in Karate there is not a real physical contact. For example if you do a "Mae geri" you will never hit your opponent but just act like.

Belt doesn't have any importance. When i lived in London i met a couple of guys holding black belts. They studied jūdō for 3 years. However their had really poor skills and i would rate them as an orange belt. That is why i think, the bell color is not important at all. When i was in London, i saw a gym just right the back of the University of London. That gym could be a good start for you, because there are many University Student there (Your same age would be better for you).

to start jūdō. I have been doing jūdō from more than 23 years now and i can say that i still love it like when i started. In my country Japan ,jūdō is much popular than Karate and practice jūdō as a way of life.
