Not an expert but I don't believe it's so much noise abatement here (though there are plenty of regulations surrounding those too) but rather because the airport is nestled between two hills, forcing both Approach and Liftoff to be steep. KSAN has long been regarded as one of the most difficult international commercial airports for pilots to work.

the pilot had to put it in autopilot and rush to the lavatory ASAP. =] it always scares me when the plane drops like that :(

another airport where they do this is KSNA or johnwayne orange county. they climb steeply like that because of noise abandonment procedures, they climb high and cut the engines, the aircraft will tend to feel like its dropping but actually its just decreasing its rate of decent (ur still going up!)u can hear the engines spool down quite alot :)

I always hate the takeoff at SD,they ALWAYS do that,last flight I was on it was TOO steep.We droped a bit but were high enough not crsh(luckly). Anways I bet there are other places that have a more scary takeoff.

I occasionally see Delta 757's rise above the horizon like that when I'm on the freeway here...it always kinda startles me at first bc it looks freaky, ESP when they turn...like it could fall out of the sky...Always makes me smile tho. The 757 is my favorite Boeing. |
