Rei wasn't really even alive from the point she died in a battle against one of the angel....the one with the wire-like form.shinji wished that asuka and rei ruturn not his mother or father cos he really hasn't been close with any of them...but then shinji's pathetic after wishing asuka back,he stranggled her and the alternate ending was he merged with rei...and a new world was created with both their imaginations inside Eva shogoki or Eva.01 as the english version...that's how they return^^
