I don't think it comes down to Toyota being a particularly safe brand (incidentally I drive a Camry). The fact of the matter is, most small cars these days sold by Japanese, American and western European brands are very safe in general, even when compared to much larger cars from only 10 years ago. NCAP and ANCAP crash test stats back this up.Reliability on the other hand is definitely Toyota's forte. But it definitely doesn't follow that if a car is reliable, then it must also be safe.

The JDM version of this car was launched in 2007; Toyota held the 10th gen back from North America for two years to make various improvements. What it's doing in the Euro NCAP is beyond me as I thought the EU was only getting hatchback Corollas (Altis) this time around...
