Tree Stand Safety

Most people that are hurt during hunting season are injured falling from tree stands. So today, we're getting some advice from a friend that will let us enjoy hunting from a stand, and do it safely. First, check it out. If you use a permanent stand, replace any worn or weak lumber before the season. On a portable stand, inspect for loose nuts and bolts each time it's used. Next, be sure to tell a dependable person where you're hunting and when you plan to return. Map your whereabouts and leave a note at camp, at home or in your car. As a precaution, remove logs, upturned and cutoff saplings, rocks, and other objects from the ground below your tree stand. Always use a climbing belt. If you're using climbing devices, choose only healthy living trees. Once you're in the stand, always keep your safety harness fastened. A safety belt will do in a pinch, But the harness is better, and never use a rope in place of a safety belt. Never carry equipment with you when you climb. Use a haul line to raise and lower your gear, first making sure guns are unloaded and broadhead arrows are covered. Wear boots with non-skid soles and don=t let yourself fall asleep. Finally, carry a whistle, first aid kit, flashlight and cellular phone, in case you do run into trouble. Despite all your efforts, accidents can still happen and equipment can still fail. It only takes a little extra time and planning to make sure your tree stand hunting is a safe and enjoyable experience.
