What many of you Julie Andrews-supporters don't understand is the approach they took. Since film is a realistic medium, they decided to go with a 'more realistic,' thus darker approach -- including natural singing by the 2 leads, Harris and Redgrave, to give the film a more grounded feel rather an 'operetta-ish' mode. And so when Julie Andrews passed on the role -- it had been offered to her, they let it go at that, and went for less-than-polished actor/singers like Harris and Redgrave.

Jeez, you people who are so critical of Vanessa's singing - shut your pie-holes! She did a bang-up job. So sexy and seductive! God forbid they should use an actress who actually sounds like a real person. Don't get me wrong - I love Julie - especially in Mary Poppins and Sound of Music; but wouldn't want anyone else as Guineverre except for Vanessa - and that INCLUDES her singing!

This was a cool musical. I have never seen a musical that featured King Arthur or knights like this, its pretty kool!

Wow, Vanessa should have been dubbed lol truly awful rendition. The whispering, creaking and wailing she does to get through the song, thank god she didn't sing the full song only a tiny section before she was drowned out by the ensemble. Vanessa should have stayed away from musical genre entirely, and like Audrey Hepburn, left it to the professionals;)

I always loved the seductive way Vanessa did this number in comparison to Julie.

She was well payed.Vanessa is always a good actress(and so good looking here), but - not easy doing this, a dub over might helped this terrible singing.

Julie may be only two years older than Vanessa, but she seems like a relic compared to Vanessa especially in 1967. She is not beautiful in the way Vanessa is and that's the primary reason why she wasn't chosen for the film versions of My Fair Lady and Camelot. Film is a realistic medium, Julie can get away with it onstage but not on film.

You're not making sense. Julie Andrews is only two years older than Redgrave. And Redgrave makes Audrey Hepburn sound like ... well, Julie Andrews. I've never been able to make any sense out the casting of this movie. And not just the singing, but the rhythm of the songs is just a disaster.

Vanessa is simply GORGEOUS! The singing is not great, but she is credible as Guinevere.I love Andrews, too, but she was too old by the time they made this film. She probably could have acted "Simple Joys of Maidenhood," convincingly, but could not have withstood the closeups. |
