this video is not out of sync.abbado conducts one beat ahead of whats written, just one way to conduct an orchestra.the conductor isn't "completely useless" or "overpaid" as previous post have suggested. maybe you shouldn't watch the video if you don't understand what's going on. ignorance is bliss I know.

As music critic Paul Rosenfeld said:"Mahler's symphonies are monuments of anguished aborted life...his center was not in his composition..it remained within himself; and although a vivid impulse drove him to selfless expression, a far stronger wrenched the impulse into service to an arid egoism. The man was a slave..he needed the public to feel certain glorious things about him...to be place among the immortals...and this motive was always uppermost in his breast when he approached his worktable

As the great american music critic olin downes said in an article about Mahlers 5th: "the 5th has the same defeacts as the others... its ideas are commonplace...it's prolix and tiresome...theatrical, bombastic and sentimental...the most pathetic thing about this music is its complete sincerity. |
