It's odd that I have never thought of the 50s as being a particularly important period in the history of filmmaking and acting, but that may change in light of Blackboard Jungle. Bear in mind that this is the only portion of the film I've ever seen and I just finished with it. It plays more like a modern film than pretty much any other filmmaking I've seen from that period. It could easily be from any period. Fantastic acting abilities on the part of pretty much the whole cast.

The movies which continue to be seen long after their times work on the strength of their story telling ability, which comes from solid performances and craftsmanship of writer, director, cinematopher, art direction, etc. There is also an incredible artistic element of these movies being shot in black and white. To think, Turner tried to colorize these masterpieces. Thankfully the process has long been buried and audiences and re-discover the beauty of black and white cinematography.

Thanks for the post. I met Sidney Poitier one day in Beverly Hills and asked him about the film. He was a total gentleman...we talked about what we were up to for the rest of the day and then he shook my hand. By weird coincidence, I had seen him about a year before at a car wash on Pico. I also met Glenn Ford when he was bedridden, about a year or two before he died...he wasn't that responsive when I met him and he died a year or so later. |
