Well it depends. If you talk to Sonic Youth or Cobain they'll tell you they're more punk (well, Cobain ain't saying much these days). Soungarden and PJ are more Black Sabbath and Zeppelin respectively, although some of the PJ guys are also into punk. So grunge was just a term coined by savvy journos to put a name to something they didn't really understand. Putting all these bands in the same bag was stupid. But if we need to, I'd still say these bands are more heavy rock/metal than punk.
