Thx for posting this - I feel yr pain! I moved to Dunedin from Wgtn a year ago. The drivers are far worse down here - it's like many of them have never seen a sub/urban cyclist before!I don't drive a car, but I suspect that many of the close calls are down to drivers not being able to judge how fast cyclists are travelling, so they see a gap where there isn't one. Maybe there needs to be some education here, eg if the cyclist is <5 car-lengths away, then wait for them to pass before turning?

Riding close to the curb encourages drivers to overtake you without changing their course (is that correct English? I'm French), thus putting you at risk. Riding further away from the curb forces drivers to wait till they have enough room.
Zerthic (April 22, 2008 at 11:26 am)
There's no need to pass a car on normal in-town roads, they don't move at such laid back speed, therefore there isn't room for it, especially with traffic coming the other way. How exactly is it safer to be further away from the curb than closer to it?
richyrich247 (April 22, 2008 at 10:55 am)
Riding a meter out from the curb is both legal and the safest place for a cyclist in trafic. If you have ever read the book called Cyclecraft: Skilled Cycling Techniques for Adults by John Franklin you will know this is the primary cycling position. When cars overtake a cyclist they have to leave as much room as they would if overtaking a car as stated in the highway code. Is this done NO. Get your facts right Zerthic so what if a car has to wait a few seconds to overtake safely.

The new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser seats five and comes in two-tone with a Voodoo Blue, Titanium Metallic, Black Diamond, Sun Fusion, Sandstorm or Brick body color and White top. The interior fabric color is Dark Charcoal, while the dash, center instrument panel trim and the door inserts match the body.
