Just to clear up a few misunderstanding's, they are fighting because their ship is beyond repair, the whole crew loves the ship but Luffy decided to do what's best for the crew and get a new ship. But Usopp is not willing to accept it. After all their adventures on their ship, it would feel like throwing away a member of their crew, so Usopp challenges Luffy to a duel for ownership of Merry. After he loses he leaves the crew...but not forever.

the town is called water 7 its a shipswright town where they go to get the going merry fixed. the battle is started because merry cant be repaired and ussop is fighting him for the rights to the ship, cause luffys gonna get a new ship
