It is one thing to question why the US ever accepts a dictator as a partner. FM said communism were threatening the Phil, that he needed martial law to defeat them. He knew this cry would appeal to washington, even though it had little, if any, foundation on reality. Sadly, US officials exaggerated the "breakdown of law & order" in the Phil to protect of course their main interest - SUBIC and CLARK, strategic military bases in Asia to prevent the Red army from flexing their muscles.
