Beautiful. Prefer the "Cavatina" from Op.130 though.

Yes, he was indeed the convalescent here. He suffered from some kind of intestinal thing, very painful, apparently. He was adviced by his doctor to cut back on coffee and alcohol and spicey food, etc.

I don't think I've ever been so moved by a piece of music this much - had me reaching for the tissues (because i was crying, not because...well, you know). do you think that Beethoven was the convalescent here? I think had been recovering from jaundice that had very nearly killed him, although this is also alluded to in the piano sonata opus110 so maybe the quartet is a little late for that. I'd be interested to hear your views.

Listen to 20 different recordings and listen to this music for 25 years and you might change your mind. Tempo per se, in any case, is not all that crucial here. Meaningful phrasing, knowing when to speak and when to sing and the ability to communicate an understanding of the spirit behind the notes, on the other hand, is. But sticking to the question of tempo I'd say the Talich are pretty much spot on (IMO, that is), although my favourite account is the 2nd Végh (even faster than this account).

This is played way to fast. Molto Adagio is very slow

"Solemn song of thanksgiving of a convelescent to The Diety". My favorite of the master's late quartets.

I ahd a recording of this quartet by the Budapest over thirty years ago in college and it always reduced me to tears. How could a man ever write this kind of music? Truly, we don't deserve Beethoven; maybe that's why he was so insufferable. Something happened to this group of musicians when they recorded this music and it wasn't normal. |
