I don't speak nor read Japanese, but often wandered off by myself and was OK on their rail/subway system. Yeah... plan to spend a lot. Do the whole bit though, the countryside there is awesome, and may be necessary after the stress if the mega-city. Yup, be prepared for stress too!

How hard was it to get around in japan not knowing Japanese? I figure it would be a neet (but expensive as hell) place to take a vacation.

Yep, there is an internal ankle brace in grey. The outer white armor just for that goes on top of it.

how come in the second part of the anatomy the ankle brace is gray? does it have some piece that goes over it?
