I cannot watch this without crying! Geeez! Havent we all been somewhere close to this pain! Those of us who have, will feel the rip gape open again! Brilliant performance! I think almost too real! Maybe she's reflecting upon Kenneth? Cos MAN this is hurtful to watch!

Years ago I managed a jewellers one of the shop assistant's mothers used to come in and I'd sometimes chat with her, and pass the time of day. She was a nice, usually cheerful woman.Her daughter told me one day she'd had a brother who when playing with some other kids, they'd thrown a can of paint on a bonfire, and it exploded and her brother was killed.The scene when she comes back downstairs reminded me of that, the pain people carry, and the smile we see, through the dark shroud of life.

All the little things he does and say make it so much worse. "Grumpy Bugger" "To continue your emotional education" "My brilliant wife" Those aren't things you want to hear when you realize your husband just gave the gold necklace to the little harpy at work.

this is one of the most achingly beautiful scenes in a movie.emma thompson is perfect in this and joni mitchell's slow rendition of "both sides now" made the whole thing even more sad!i love this.

when she opened the cd, i remember watching her realization and thinking, please don't play "both sides now"--it would be too much to bear. the scene in the bedroom--that haunting, bittersweet song playing as she tries desperately to pull herself together--devastated me. it still does. brilliant.

I remember watching this scene and crying because of the song! A trly beautiful film which I watch a few days before Xmas every year and only then.

I remember watching this scene in the movies and I definitely felt as if I had been suckered punched in the gut by both Emma's stellar subtle acting and Joni Michells' haunting vocals. This scene, no words, just sheer brilliance by ET! I CRIED when I saw this scene and so did many of the people in the audience. So true and so real..BRAVE to Ms. Emma T!!
