Watch the amazing "Gallopin' Gertie" November 7, 1940 video clip.1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge Slender, elegant and graceful, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge stretched like a steel ribbon across Puget Sound in 1940. The third longest suspension span in the world opened on July 1st. Only four months later, the great span's short life ended in disaster. "Galloping Gertie," collapsed in a windstorm on November 7,1940. The bridge became famous as "the most dramatic failure in bridge engineering history." Now, it's also "one of the world's largest man-made reefs." The sunken remains of Galloping Gertie were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 to protect her from salvagers. A dramatic tale of failure and successThe story of the failure of the 1940 Narrows Bridge and the success of the Current Narrows Bridge is a great American saga. When Galloping Gertie splashed into Puget Sound, it created ripple effects across the nation and around the world. The event changed forever how engineers design suspension bridges. Gertie's failure led to the safer suspension spans we use today.

Since Tubby isn't here. I will say what he would have said on your comment. "NO U!"

The wind blowing "tuned" into the natural resonation frequency of the bridge.Like a tuning fork when struck and placed closely to an acoustic guitar can cause the strings on a guitar to resonate to the same frequency of the tuning folk. This is in comparison what happened to this bridge when the wind blew across it. Engineers since have understood such phenomenon and take take steps in bridge design to prevent this happening again with suspension bridges.

Tubby became fish food.

R.I.P Tubby. I'm sad now :(He's in doggy heaven now. Actually no, he's in animal heaven. Where all the animals live in peace and don't have to eat each other because they are dead and don't need food but just chase each other for fun anyways :)

The "Narrows Bridge" is no small bridge. It spans 1 mile across.

mind boggling how simple 40 mph winds can bend steel, or solid pavement for that matter, i didn't even know cement could bend at all, anyways, if that can happen to a small bridge imagine what can happen to a larger bridge of the exact same architecture , such as the golden gate bridge witch is probably older then the one shown in the footage (not the newer narrows bridge the older one) by now its most likely twice the age of the old one and 50 mph winds will likely destroy it

correction: just red that the dog did die. so someone obiovusly didnt want me as a kid to be upset! From Wiki: Tubby, a black male cocker spaniel dog, was the only fatality of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge disaster. Leonard Coatsworth, a Tacoma News Tribune photographer, was forced to flee his car, leaving Tubby behind. Professor Farquharson and a news photographer attempted to rescue Tubby, but the dog was too terrified to leave the car and bit one of the rescuers. Tubby died when the bridge fell.

I remember asking someone when I was young if the dog died, but it was pointed out to me that this car was not actually onthe bridge when it collapsed. the bridge would sway and then calm down and the driver eventually got off with his car. the film clips were edited together that made it look like the car was on the bridge at the time.
