It's when a 360 for example can play original xbox games, or when the Wii can play gamecube games, or the ps3 original playstation and ps2 games. When a new system can regress into the old system (backwards) and play old formats, and be compatible with them.

That is the Core version, not the Premium. Premium comes with a 20gig harddrive, now 60 gig.
