Visual, the beam is apparent when placed in the sun. It is really easy to calculate.

How did you calculate the correct focal length to position the water pipe. Presumably it will be different for a different size tube?
GREENPOWERSCIENCE (September 10, 2008 at 12:28 pm)
Yes, You can but 4x8 sheets of 1/8" plexi mirror local companies. About $150. A wooden trough frame will hold them. Bend and they pop into place. Small deviation throughout the day due to temperature change. No big deal. The trough needs to be 2' wide to get a flexible bend, 1' is too rigid without molding.

As an after thought you could just apply the parabolic shaped (formers) directly to those stiff looking reflective sheets you had a hold of at the beggining of the video. And you arent governed by the diameter of the pipe then.

After you have cut the pipe, would it be worth while placing end caps of the correct parabolic shape into each end and several along the length so as to force the pipe into a parabolic shape.

You are very handy with a saw, love your videos. Only negative point is that the trough is not a parabola. I made the same mistake- took a circle, drew a vertical line to represent sunlight, it would bounce clear across to the other side and bounce out missing the pipe. But your pipe is big enough to gather most of the sunlight.Peace.

Well, when you were younger did you ever set fire to paper with a magnifying glass? This is the same principle, but what you need is enough time for the water to turn into steam. That means longer arrays and tubing that can withstand steam. The rate of the water flowing through the pipes would also make a big difference. All in all, it is possible. |
