I find this heartbreakingly beautiful.Pogorelich always delves deep to find previously undiscovered hidden treasures within every score. He is a composer's pianist and musician.Everything he does speaks to my condition. He shapes sounds from out ivory keys as Michealngelo scultped shapes from marble slabs with a feeling for the eternal. This is heaven for me!

Gould never believed there is one "correct" way to approach a composition. He believed that there are infinite approaches left to be discovered. Be well.

If anyone is deliberate it's Pogorelich. With him one gets the sense the every single note was examined and sculpted. For me, Pogorelich's genius is the cultivation of complex musical drama via attention to dynamic range and tonal coloring. With Gould one gets a very strong sense of the architectonics of a piece. At the same time, Gould always keeps you on your toes, almost as if he is creating the music as he goes along, as opposed to the locked in approach you perceive....continued

Part 3With Pogo - this sense of the infinity of musical ideas is always present. This is readily apparent with close listening! Be well.

Part 2The problem is - as varied as Gould's approach is, phrasing wise, it is because of that very approach that he limits the phrasing possibilities that are inherent in and are the essence of Bach's art. The sense of "over-the-bar" phrasing, and metrical complexity are lost with Gould, because of the very deliberate stylistic and interpretive choices that he makes.

Part 1Thanks, Pogouldiwitz for your comment. You make valid points, which I don't entirely disagree with. Indeed, Gould is a master of articulation - on the foreground and background level, and I agree with you that he is intensely mindful of phrase-structure.

Insight? Why, because he agrees with you? Faulting Gould for a lack of variety in phrasing is about as ludicrous an evaluation of any artist's art as I've ever heard. Variety of phrasing is one of Gould's shticks. Mind you, I adore this interpretation. As long as a performance adheres to it's own internal logic, then I have no complaints.
