I wonder where did you find the info that the touch control is Broadcom BCM5973A?I have found four chips on this flex cable.There are: 32TQFP - CD3238, 49 BGA - APPLE, 100BGA - LPC2221, 8 pin DIL chip.I think high failure level of touch screen is related to these two BGA chips soldered back to back on very thin, flexible board. It is hard to evenly distribute heat in such layout, so some balls are poorly soldered and may fail, especially if ambient temperature is changing in wide range.
