They say its stupid mostly because of the English dub, which is horrible. Watch the sub Japanese version from episode 1 and its really good.

Atleast be literate and hate it for something other than it's artstyle and making fun of it's title is ridiculous. Other than that, this is one of those pwning moments of Luffy. Gear Second is a marvelous idea that I can't think of if I were to have a rubber dude as my main character in a manga. Oda is amazing. :D Goodjob!
