Yeah guys, just to confirm, these are actual materials. I'm currently researching the properties they have that lead to behavior such as this. The reason it says 'artists' at the end is because this is a piece of moving sculpture, a legitimate physical work of art using real materials that just happen to behave strangely.

Yeah, of course.. maybe I should reconsider..

Everyone, stop fighting that it's a computer animation. It's real. SACHIKO KODAMA created a art piece like this. And I believe she was the first. Her piece was named "Protrude, Flow". Ferrofluid is the black liquid you see. Ferrofluid is a very interesting material originally developed by NASA it has now found itself been used for a whole range of devices including dampers for controlling and stabilizing large building that move around in the wind. A hint: the actions of ferrofluids like this one do not correspond to our everyday intuitions of fluids. Our everyday intuitions are based on Newtonian fluids. A ferrofluid however, is non-Newtonian. Intuitions concerning ferrofluids therefore, are not reliable, and to make a prediction, you just have to do the math (good luck!).Anyway, animation or not it is very artistic, so let's just treat it like that: enjoy it.

Here's an idea, there are a lot of similar videos to the right. There's one of them where the artist is standing behind a similar structure, giving a demonstration. Behind him is a screen showing a closer view. It's clearly real in that video, so it is very possibly real in this one.

It's real - not animated.
Tremblador (October 5, 2008 at 4:34 am)
It is computer animation ! The way the towers and the waves move is typical, but it's a good work. Note at the end : it's not written "inventors, towers controllers, builders" or watever.. but « artists ».

Its actually real... Its ferromagnetic fluid with a couple of electromagnetic towers... |
