The Gracies tend to focus more on the sport competition side of Jiujitsu. The Machados focus moreso on the combat side (i.e. the street effectiveness). You can see a difference in their styles (even though they come from the same source).

JJ's awesome, and I think Rigan was considered superior to him...but better than the Gracies? Where do you think JJ and the rest of the Machados got it? They are actually cousins to the Gracies so it's almost the same family. Other than that most of "the elite" consider Rickson to be the best jiujitero of all time and that's only because Rolls died so young. Nothing against ANY of the Machado's but saying they are > the Gracies? Put the pipe down bro.
