I made that comment many months ago--I've actually developed a taste for baritones, training as one myself. I especially like Tibbett, and Terfel (but not in this aria), and more contemporary ones like Gunn. But I still love them tenors. :P Depends on the tenor, though.

I am the polar opposite of you. I have a dreadful time listening to tenors! Lol. It's preference. I prefer a full sound and mid to lower range stuff and I think baritone high notes are way more thrilling (Merrill's A flat in Il Prologo on Youtube). It's what you know, and being a baritone, it's what I know. The dislike for tenors actually runs in my family though oddly enough. Lol. Just give them a chance. Robert Merrill is a good baritone to listen to.

It's something you gotta get used to, in the sense that you have to try to understand that emotion can be conveyed in many ways that might be unusual or unexpected. It has to do with the mainstream culture and aesthetics you have been brought up into. Also, It might have to do with your experience and your age. Something good about ageing is that you may become more sensitive to reality without being hurt by it. The same patterns is valid for musical taste. Hope you weren't ironic :)

It doesn't have anything to do with the pitch of the note. It has to do with how the singer chooses to sing it. Go listen to thrash metal and you'll see the other extreme if you're really interested.

No, it's like you compare violin to a cello, you get that effect.

Not dramatic enough for wagner, I don't care for this performance enough!

Wow! Where was that? What did he sing? Heard him in Dresden last year.

You suffer from a perversion of musical taste.

The Tibbett version you want is the one posted by primobaritono.

Pace Bryn (and I am Welsh) there is nothing much to be had in this interpretation. Please try the Tibbett or Berglund versions of this aria on YT. I hope you like them. |
