From Wikipedia: "Welk didn't learn English until he was 21 because he always spoke German at home; thus, he spoke with a noticeable German accent for the rest of his life. When he was asked about his ancestry, he replied always with "Alsace-Lorraine, Germany" (Alsace-Lorraine is currently in France; at the time of Welk's birth up until the end of World War One it belonged to Germany).
