The thing about Elvin Jones is that he has a lightness of touch that most contemporary drummers do not have. Elvin can be fast and thunderous at times but he never drowns out the others. Part of that comes from having a pianist with a strong left hand in the band. That anchors things down and frees the drummer to lighten his touch and explore. Elvin does some of the best snare work I have ever heard.Beautiful track, man. Lucky old Ralph Gleeson being there to hear this.

You're right. We are so fortunate to have McCoy. AND to see guys like McCoy come full circle, i.e Mccoy does Bachrach. Seems like guys like Miles, McCoy and johnny Mc followed that same evolutionary path in that they fiercly embraced that modal thing and eventually came around to more of a hybrid performance i.e. Miles doing Time After Time near the end. |
