there was bassist working with a chamber group that i was in that also did that. i assumed it was a technique the the lower strings used but i guess it also works on viola and probably violin. i think it works by somehow vibrating the pitch as it resonates through the body of the instrument. i don't know why i haven't tried it when i first saw it, but now after seeing this i think i'll go try it.

You might want to rethink that statement. There is a reason they are not injured. Really look at the body as they play. They are free in ways that "good" posture, often times STIFF and upright, doesn't offer. Most people don't play in this style anymore, unfortunately.
