Thats great. I have 1980 CR80 that bike was pretty fast. Dual real shocks awesome. Vintage bikes kick ass.

Well, not that European bikes don't make the same thing but they change distributors, owners, locations, etc, making it harder to get parts. Funny, it's easier to get Maico parts than older KTM parts even though KTM is still in buissness (of course Maico is too but it's changed owners more times than a Indonesian prostitute).

It's a Honda, unlike European bikes they are usually quite standard for a number of years and Honda generally sells everything cheap and easy to get. In fact, I just checked MrCycles and a 76 CR250 connecting rod is $95, crank pin is $21, bearing is $15 and washers are $8.

Do a search on google for "ADB's Test of Time: A 1981 Maico 490 Mega 2 vs a 2003 KTM 525SX"Dirt bike magazine pitted a 1981 Maico 490 against a 2003 KTM 525 (in 2003) to determine how far dirt bike technology has come in over 20 years. The Maico was #1 in it's day and the KTM was #1 5 years ago.You will be surprised by the results!

Yes!Beer and a few mates round! all look at the thing after starting it up, just sit in the garage on a cheap sofa and drink beer, maybe a few naughty cigarettes and enjoy the 2 stroke smell mixed with the backy etc! heaven!I dont actually own a bike its my mate who does, he has a few. had a gas gas250 enduro, ktm to name a fewI rode a maico 490 when I was 12 couldnt touch floor someone had to put it in 1st for me; I was beaten by a dt125 with a good riderI also love villiers 210 karts

you make a good point there, i enjoying chatting with people that arnt so far up their own ass they cant see daylight. When you buy a 2008 MX'er it is pretty much set up for the average rider. Buy a CR85 is set up for a 45kg rider. Buy a CR125 and its set up for a 60kg rider, and 250 is usally set up for a 80kg rider. Its pretty much out the box tricked out. The older bikes are fun to tinker with, nothing like looking at the ol' 76' CR250 you just rebuild and thinking "Damn, that looks awasome"

Keep an eye on that rod/ bearings.after a while they can get little rust imperfections if moisture has got in.Can u still get the rod kits with crankpin etc?
tpvalley (July 18, 2008 at 9:47 am)
and they lose about 30% of their power when hot through heat fade!I still prefer them though! That is character!I guess thats why folk race twinshock? Its interesting tuning old technology.New bikes r like the F1 of cars, perfect out of the box, just no soul.Obviously new uns would win most races but I saw an enduro once and someone won on an old maico!A good set up old bike is still good. And being talentless would I even notice the difference?!! :-)
