I think his "cleaner" overdrive/distortion comes from whatever amp heads he uses (Silvertones?), since the Fender Twin Reverbs don't have built-in distortion, and then the big, booming distortion comes from the Big Muff, which he had modified. Either that, or the primary distortion comes from the Muff alone and he kicks on his MXR Microamp for that more outta control sound. I can't be sure since I haven't experimented with that combination of effects myself.
