People confuse the shit and try to say like your supposed to make it not sound like a sample but i like it if it does sound like a sample and thats what producers like 9th are looking for.I wanna hear that vinyl crackle, that voice being chopped right in the middle of a word and than having bass and a violin and piano being chopped right at the same time while having that 60s or 70s sound.

I think you see it wrong zedek.People like 9th wonder for instance can play instruments(read his interviews) but chooses to sample because he wants that sound that sampling gives.you can try hiring studio musicians and make the shit sound like it was sampled from a 70s vinylrecord and mixed the way they did back then and than have layers choppen but mostly you can still hear its not a sample.well.

I sample, but it's not like I sample 4 bars and then loop a drum break over it.I might slice it up in small pieces, rearrange them, change pitch, tempo, stereo separation, add effects, and much more. I also slice drum breaks and make my own pattern of it. Sometimes I even add my own instruments to it. In the end, the sample is barely/merely noticable.I've made lots of beats without sampling, but I prefer sampling for lots of reasons. If I had my own orchestra, I'd never sample again.

Music is music. Be it from an electronic device, computer program or classic instrument. Stop fussing over semantics and just produce whatever you want.

Yeah I agree, but sampling can be abused to the point of no effort. A lot of people did that, and now that I look back, it was not really 'their' music. My point is that you don't HAVE TO sample nowadays. There are so many plug-ins out there you can make a whole album tweeking TEN good Plug-ins and a good drum kit(electronic sample kit).Shit's as easy as hell if people just take the time to learn and not have the music 'given' to them.

Very very true man. We call them "Pro Tool Robots". Don't get me wrong, I edit with Pro Tools now, but you gotta learn how to exist as a musician and artist without all the gadgets, even just MIDI Samplers or sequencers like Pro Tools, etc. If you can take a band, or instruments, hook them up to mics and stand alone processors, through a Mackey, and on to a recorder, you got my respect. And after ALL that, it needs to be original. Not 'good' as much as original and from the heart.

If anyone can't feel the space robot pimpness of the intro, there is something wrong with them. That shit is the ESSENCE. And the tribal style of the drums where he doubles up the snare and the bass just keeps one note while she plucks. Sorry but this shit is a war drum. Armies of people coming for someone's ass because they did them wrong, LOL.Well, that's what I imagine. |
