Tour of Sicily 2006

A tour of Sicily also provided the opportunity to see one of the island's greatest natural attractions and highest mountain, the 3350m Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano. A barren almost lunar landscape awaits the tourist on the upper slopes although Oak, Beech, Stone Pine and Birch cover a considerable part of the mountainside.Highlights of the tour included The Doric Temple of Concord and the hilltop temple of Juno Lacinia in Agrigento at the UNESCO World heritage site at the Valley of the Temples located on a plateau overlooking the island's southern coast as well as Taormina situated on a 700ft plateau and where a self-exiled D.H. Lawrence was inspired to write 'Lady Chatterly's Lover'.At Syracuse interesting rock formations and a well-preserved Greek amphitheatre literally carved out of the rock and also a Roman one, all await the visitor. At Villa Romana del Casale the late Roman "Bikini Girls" mosaics is the attraction while a visit to Selinunte, the ancient Greek archaeological site situated on the south coast of Sicily and the remains of the Acropolis, before an overnight stay at the fascinating city of Palermo, founded by the Phoenicians in the eighth century BC as a port, completed the tour.*[Taormina situated on a 700ft plateau, Mount Etna (see other video), Syracuse ancient Grecian sites, Casale with the "Bikini Girls", Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples; the Doric Temple of Concord and the hilltop temple of Juno Lacinia.
