I agree, Roosevelt Franklin was a really cool character. However, some people thought that the way Roosevelt talked was a stereotype of African-American people, and Roosevelt Franklin was removed from Sesame Street.I don't agree that this is a stereotype. I think Roosevelt Franklin is one cool guy, and many people agree that his "jive" talking is not offensive.

I think this clip is kind of useless. Its intentions are good, but I think the whole thing falls flat because they don't use any visual examples. Sesame Street always used vocabulary over kids' heads, but in this case I think it was a bad decision because without cutting away to film clips of what Roosevelt was describing, many kids wouldn't have known what those words mean, or what they "look like", as Roosevelt kept saying. They should have cross-dissolved to film footage of each thing.

I know the clip is about moving beyond just stereotypes, but there is something about Miss I-Know-Everything's attitude that always cracks me up, don't know why, "It's a jungle, just one big jungle! I know because I saw it on a Tarzan movie!" Well, no one can say she isn't participating.

"Hail to thee, our alma matta!" Cute!I'm glad I get to see these here. By the time I was old enough to watch and remember, Roosevelt Franklin was pretty much gone.

Franklin Roosevelt's programs paved the way for us to help Africa green the desert. Human beings have a power that no other animal has; they are meant to go out and try to discover those principles which organize our universe. We are able to not only multiply our populations in newfound hospitable lands, as animals do, but we are capable of discovering principles which change our relationship to the non-living world, enabling us to inhabit places, and do so increasingly efficiently. |
