This is the most beautiful overture i know. I love Richard Wagner and his music and this overture to Tannhäuser is just one of his best pieces (only exeeded by "Elsas Procession to the Cathedral" from Lohengrin). These tone colors ... amazing!

Well put: Caravaggio was a murderer, one is foolish however to contest the quality of his work based on that point. Likewise, Wagner's personal shortcomings (which, one might argue, are not nearly as serious as others') and his latter, involuntary appropriation by the NSDAP, ought not colour appreciation of - in fact, ought pale in comparison to his music.

humbert80 Thank you for your expression of the emotions evoked by this wonderful music. I felt your words which I read and the music I heard were in complete harmony.

About the nazi controversy. Adolf Hitler was an admirer´s of Wagner´s Music, the rest of the nazis not.. So, the ideals of the nazis cannot be associated with wagnerianism. On the other hand, the ideas that modern society has about Nationalsocialism regime and Ideology are extremely childish. In my opinion, any other stateman that had been able to unify Germany would have reclaimed the Sudeten and Dantzig. What is more, any stateman in another any country would have reacted the same way.

I'm sorry to say but those composers cannot be ranked with each other (incommensurable). No one would deny that those composers were all great masters who wrote masterpieces, but the emotions evoked by each individual piece from each composer are only a matter of taste. For instance, I don't like listening to Carl Orff's"Carmina Burana" but I would be foolish to say it is not a masterpiece just because it doesn't evoke the feelings I have a particular preference for.

More like it's Grand-father.

You have a very valid point.
