Al Jazeera's Lucrecia Franco reports from Venezuela, on how the chocolate industry is becoming a new battleground. As left-wing nationalism spreads across Latin America, foreign companies there are having to rethink their business strategies.Willie Harcourt-Cooze, a British entrepreneur who has been dubbed Willy Wonka after the fictional character, is using Venezuelan cacao beans to make a highly sought-after chocolate.Harcourt-Cooze boasted that his South American plantation produces "the finest, rarest and most expensive cacao in the world".However, his success has left a bitter taste in the mouth of Hugo Chavez, the country's president.Chavez has ordered an investigation into his export business.

If you going to compare the Venezuelan judicial process with what is going on in other countries, you better do some research on Chavez and his government. By the way, let assure you that Chavez would never win a fair election.

haha judicial process, that's a good one, as if USA or England has fair judicial processes, lmao, true not everyone agrees with Chavez in Venezuela, just as not every North American agrees with whatever President they elect, the fact remains he is president and the majority of Venezuelans that i know approve of him, and he has every right to investigate and tax the brit who pays his workers little while he makes bank.

This is just another example why Chavez deserves to be called a dictator. In a well run democracy labor policies and taxes would be implemented in other to protect the nation's interests. But not, he did what he always does. Blame every thing on the gringos and the elite. And where is the judicial process in this case anyway.

I cannot see how the producer is exploiting the workers of the plantation. He is in fact providing employment which can only be good for the local economy. Is Chavez suggesting that the government should ban exports of the raw cacao? By promoting Venezuelan cacao Willy is surely doing the country a great service as this will lead to increased demand and an increase of the value of Venezuelan cacao.

And most of you are missing the complexity that this report is showing. It´s not so black & white as Chavistas and Anti-chavistas like to think it is.

I think most of you are missing the point of the complexity of venezuela. Here is a guy that has worked 10 years and is getting rich exporting food stuff all of it to england. But at what price? and how? What is he hiding?---If this was venezuelan TV, this is how RCTV & Globovision would show this story: Chavez the evil dictator is imposing communism on a succeful british enterpenuer. And of Course VTV would be: Britsh guy exploiting and impovering a whole community while getting rich himself!

impose a big tax on chocolate/trees so that both the state AND that motherfucker do relatively well, just like everywhere in the civilized world ...
CURERE777 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
ehunter, I agree, choices do have consequences and venezuelans are fighting that regime, i dont believe that their first desire is to leave that great country, just to take Mr Chavez and few radicals that still are left by his side. most of them are connected to the corrupt goberment regine or do it out of resentment) which is easy to visualize when they comunicate. vzanel, you are entitled to your opinion but you do not speak for the venezuelan people.i want people of this blog to know that.
